In mid-2004 Jayrow Helicopters was awarded a contract to support offshore petroleum facilities in Bass Strait, Australia.
Following a detailed study of airports in the area Tooradin Airport was chosen as the preferred location, for a number of reasons, including:
-
proximity to Melbourne’s International/Domestic Airport
(Tullamarine)
-
location adjacent to a major arterial
road
-
central to coastal Victoria and Bass
Strait
-
ample space available for future base
expansion

The privately owned Tooradin Airport combines a 1000m sealed and lit runway with a semi-rural environment.
It is also served by a recently commissioned GPS approach, providing return-to-base capability for onshore flights in almost all weather conditions. Combine this with a low volume of aircraft traffic and on-time departures are assured.
Stage one of this facility was completed in Aug 2004. It consists of a 570m˛ administration building containing two reception areas, passenger check-in, numerous offices, conference room, kitchen and toilet facilities.
The adjacent 950m˛ hangar opens onto a large sealed aircraft movement area and a 20000 litre fuel farm. Access to the main runway is provided by a sealed taxiway.
The whole facility, including an extensive concreted car park, is surrounded by security fencing.
Manufactured in the United States by one of the most renowned and longest standing aircraft companies in the
world, these fast reliable aircraft are part of a global fleet of over 600 S76’s employed in many roles including medical transfer, SAR, offshore oil support and VIP transport.
Jayrow’s Tooradin Base is crewed by a full complement of professionals including administration/ground staff, engineers, Captains and Co-Pilots whose experience and qualifications far exceed those required by CASA and APPA. In addition all pilots attend Flightsafety USA every 24 months for simulator training.
We at Jayrow Tooradin look forward to our continued expansion in support of the future needs of the offshore oil industry in Victoria.
